Austriamicrosystems, the world's leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance analog ICs for consumer and communications, industrial and medical and automotive applications, today announced the availability of the magnetic rotary position sensor chip AS5132, which provides accurate angle measurement at high speeds.
The AS5132 is a system-on-a-chip that integrates Hall elements, analog front ends, and digital signal processing on a single chip, making it ideal for industrial and automotive brushless DC motors, providing designers with a small, robust, easy-to-assemble location-aware solution. This product has extremely high anti-jamming performance against stray magnetic fields.
The new product has improved the angle error caused by propagation delays of previous generations of magnetic encoders through dynamic compensation, which is particularly evident at high speeds. Error compensation can be achieved with an integrated pre-rectifier function. The AS5132 is very easy to install and configure, and does not require external software to operate, thus reducing the load on the main microcontroller and electronic control unit (ECU). It is also possible to change the configuration while the device is running in order to respond to operating conditions such as changes in speed.
In addition, the advanced signal processing circuitry of the AS5132 makes it possible to have excellent propagation delays of less than 22 μs, which means that the angular error is very small, even before the pre-rectification operation.
In summary, even with motor speeds up to 80,000 rpm, small propagation delays and advanced pre-commutation techniques enable extremely accurate angle measurement: angular measurement accuracy of ±3° (maximum error). This will ensure that brushless DC motor manufacturers achieve a high level of continuous torque even in high speed applications.
