Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a market leader in LED lighting, today announced the availability of XLamp® XP-E High Efficiency White (HEW) LEDs. The new high-efficiency device extends the high-light output and efficacy benefits of the award-winning XLamp XP-E family of LEDs, enabling luminaire designs to save half the number of LEDs, helping luminaire and bulb manufacturers reduce costs while reducing costs Maintains excellent system performance.
Optimized XP-E HEW LEDs reduce initial cost for lighting applications such as LED replacement lamps and downlights. For example, if the XP-E LED-based A-19 lamp is redesigned with the XP-E HEW LED, the LED usage is reduced by half, and the same excellent light efficiency is maintained.
According to Paul Thieken, director of marketing for Cree LED components, “Pre-cost is still one of the biggest obstacles to LED lighting promotion and design. Cree enables designers to design brighter, more optimized LEDs for each specific application. Not only does this help reduce costs, but it also simplifies LED luminaire design and shortens design cycles."
The XLamp XP-E High Efficiency White LED is the first high power LED to use Cree's latest Direct AttachTM LED technology. Direct Attach technology is Cree's unique next-generation LED chip technology that delivers higher brightness, lower forward voltage and lower thermal resistance.
John Edmond, director of Cree's Advanced Optoelectronics Division, said: "Direct Attach not only increases the die attach area by a factor of five, but also reduces the underfill of the bare die by an order of magnitude, making it more robust than any other LED flip chip technology currently on the market. Reliable. These superior features, combined with the performance advantages of Direct Attach technology, enable our customers to develop higher brightness, higher reliability lamps at a lower cost."
At a drive current of 350mA, the light output of the XLamp XP-E high-efficiency white LED is 148lm and 114lm, respectively, corresponding to cool white (6500K) and warm white (3000K). In addition to improvements in light output and efficacy, the thermal resistance of the XP-E HEW LED drops to 6 °C/W. The XP-E HEW LED white light range is identical to the XP-E LED, including standard white light, outdoor white light, and white light with a color rendering index of 80.
Samples of the XLamp XP-E high-efficiency white LEDs are available now and will be mass-produced to standard delivery times. The IES LM-80 LED source flux maintenance test data for the XP-E HEW LED is scheduled to be available in February 2011.
