Broadcom Interprets NFC Opportunity Four-in-One Chip Mature Ecosystem

The mobile payment market provides huge business opportunities for NFC (near field wireless communication) applications. A research report from ABI Research shows that the global mobile payment transactions completed in 2012 exceeded US $ 4.2 billion, and this number is expected to reach 100 billion by 2016 US dollars.

In a rapidly maturing ecosystem, Broadcom is in an upstream position and has launched an independent NFC controller and a four-in-one combo chip integrating NFC / Bluetooth / Wi-Fi / FM radio technology.

"Coincidentally with analysts, Broadcom sees huge opportunities for future mobile payments. At present, we are also committed to helping consumers become familiar with NFC technology so that they can easily transition to complex applications such as mobile payments." Broadcom Senior Vice President Michael Hurlston, general manager of the wireless interconnect portfolio product line, said in an interview with C114.

Four-in-one chip maturing ecosystem

With the increasing deployment of infrastructure, the NFC-based mobile payment market has flourished globally since 2012. Up to now, Europe, America, Japan, South Korea and other places have entered the commercial stage, and a large number of services have been derived; in China, China UnionPay and the three major operators have also launched relevant platforms.

In this process, NFC has initially become the standard feature of mobile phones like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. According to Gartner's prediction, by 2015 50% of smartphones will have NFC capabilities. The latest ABI report believes that by 2014, more than 500 million NFC-enabled terminals will be used. Helston also said that more than 100 million mobile phones have adopted NFC technology last year alone, and some analysts predict that this number will reach 300 million this year.

As an upstream chip manufacturer, Broadcom has already launched the NFC chip BCM20793, and at the end of 2012, it launched the NFC four-in-one combination chip BCM43341. It is worth noting that the company has also recently applied the NFC software stack to the Android 4.2 operating system.

Helston disclosed that BCM43341 has now entered mass production. There are also many terminal manufacturers based on this design in mainland China and Taiwan, and the products will be gradually introduced to the market in the near future.

He further pointed out that for the successful application of mobile payment, it is particularly important to form an ecosystem of strategic partners to ensure the safety, interoperability and consistency of consumption. This ecosystem includes financial institutions, mobile wallet suppliers, technology suppliers, standardization institutions, security component suppliers, telecommunications operators, etc., and Broadcom is promoting its development.

Simplified connection: new power for NFC

Although mobile payment is the most familiar NFC application, the market potential of this technology is not limited to this.

"NFC can completely improve our communication methods, such as helping consumers simplify the complex and multi-step terminal connection process." Helston said.

For example, he said that with NFC technology, two smartphones can touch to share playlists or transfer pictures, touch the smartphone to the printer to print files such as boarding passes, and touch characters in the game system to restore Games and many other applications.

“Broadcom ’s NFC technology has been applied to new Nexus 4 smartphones and Nexus 10 tablets, Nintendo ’s Wii U, and headsets, computer mice and keyboards. We believe that NFC technology has the ability to change our perception of consumer electronics devices and How to interact with it. "

"More and more functions are integrated into mobile phones and consumer electronics devices, increasing NFC applications and ensuring that they are kept to a minimum energy consumption level, do not interfere with other devices, and can support any SE / business model, these are crucial "Helston told C114 that the BCM43341 solution greatly reduces the investment required for application technology by integrating NFC into the connected subsystem, thereby reducing these technical barriers and allowing OEMs to focus on differentiated development.

Although Helston did not make a statement about the company's future NFC product route in the interview, he expressed confidence in the bright future and large-scale application of NFC.
