CMMB terminal chip big comparison: several typical tuner analysis evaluation

The CMMB terminal chip contains modules such as a tuner, a demodulator, and a decoding descrambler, which are important as a front-end tuner. In this paper, five typical tuner chips are selected for analysis and comparison, namely ADMTV102, ADMTV803, MxL5007T, SMS1180 and TP3021.

ADMTV102 is the first ADI to support the CMMB standard tuner. It is widely used in domestic terminal equipment such as mobile phones, mobile TV, MP4, etc. In addition to supporting CMMB, the chip also supports national standard DTMB, European DVB-H/T, South Korea introduced T-DMB and FM, receiving bands including FM (65 ~ 108MHZ), band-III (174 ~ 245MHZ), VHF (470MHz ~ 862MHz), L-band (1450 ~ 1492MHz).

ADI's recently introduced ADMTV803 also supports a variety of digital TV standards, receiving bands of VHF (54 ~ 245MHz) and UHF (470 ~ 862MHz). According to the data provided by ADI's official website, ADMTV803 has newly added ATSC-M/H and Japanese ISDB-T standard support, and has switched from FM to FM-supported DAB. By disassembling, the chip RF signal input pin was reduced from three ADMTV102 to two, and the system module layout and ADMTV102 have extremely high similarity.

The MxL5007T is unique in that it can receive signals in the 44HZ to 885MHz continuous band, supporting almost all major cable, terrestrial digital and analog TV standards. The chip was mass-produced by Maxlinear in the second quarter of 2008.

The SMS1180 is the first SIP package, tuner and demodulator chip that SIANO launched in July 2008 for the Chinese market. In addition to supporting the UHF (470~862 MHz) band, the tuner also supports the S band.

The TP3021 integrates a tuner, demodulator, crystal oscillator and passive components in a 7x11mm2 module. It is an integrated CMMB receiver that is mass-produced by domestic manufacturers Taihe Zhiheng and Sharp in November 2008. It supports UHF of CMMB standard. And the S-band, but on its official website did not disclose whether its included tuner still supports other digital TV standards.

According to the information listed above, we can see some development changes of the CMMB terminal chip, which has evolved from the single tuner of the early tuner, demodulator and decoder to the current mainstream tuner and demodulator. And the supported CMMB bands are also increasing.

Chip size

The chip size of the ADMTV102 is about 2.82x2.87mm2. The ADMTV803 is only 64% of the ADMTV102 based on the same feature size, which is 2.26x2.29mm2. The chip size of the MxL5007T is 2.70x2.70mm2, which is not obvious in the current tuner, but has a certain cost advantage compared to the 4.81x3.51mm2 area of the tuner chip in the SMS1180. The tuner chip included in the TP3021 measures 2.75 x 2.69 mm2.

Power consumption

The ADMTV102 consumes 180 milliwatts and 200 milliwatts of VHF and UHF signals, respectively. The ADMTV803 consumes only half of the ADMTV102, and the low power consumption in continuous mode is 92 milliwatts (VHF) and 94 milliwatts (UHF). ), the analysis of the RF signal receiving path of the chip by Shengjing (Shanghai) Microelectronics Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Shengjing”), the difference between the two chips from the low noise to the filter circuit; the power consumption of the MxL5007T is five The highest chip size is 300 milliwatts, making it more suitable for set-top boxes than mobile devices; the TP3021 consumes less than 80 milliwatts, while SIANO claims that the SMS1180 consumes very little power at 31 milliwatts.

Sensitivity

The automatic gain control dynamic range of ADMTV102 is typically -102dBm to 0dBm, ADMTV803 is ?102dBm to +10dBm; TP3021 is tested with QPSK modulation and the receiving sensitivity is about -99.6dBm; SMS1180 has a circuit in the tuner and demodulator. The module guarantees its receiving sensitivity in an indoor deep environment. Shengjing will dissect the tuner chip in the SMS1180 in the near future.

At present, more and more domestic and foreign companies are involved in the design and production of CMMB chips. For example, Lingxin integration has launched S202ITM and S203ITM; France Dikang launched the Octopus platform and DIB10098 chip in February 2009, of which DIB10098 is tuning and solution. 65nm process chip integrated with tuning, memory and power management modules. In addition, Broadcom will also mass-produce CMMB chips incorporating tuner and demodulator at the end of 2009. The chip consumes less power and automatically recognizes and selects frequency bands.

Multi-standard tuner MxL5007T

The MxL5007T is a digital terrestrial silicon tuner manufactured by Maxlinear in 2008. The chip features a continuous band of signals from 44HZ to 885MHz via antenna or cable. It supports China CMMB, US ATSC, ATSC-M/H, and European DVB-T and many other standards.

The MxL5007T integrates variable gain LNAs, mixers, low-pass filters, automatic gain amplifiers, baseband DSPs, phase-locked loops, etc., as revealed by the sacred chip layout module map and system block diagrams (Figures 2 and 3). .

Figure 3: System block diagram of the MxL5007T chip.

The MxL5007T is 2.7X2.7mm2 in size and is medium-sized in digital TV silicon tuners, but is about 40% larger than ADI's VHF/UHF multi-digital TV standard silicon tuner ADMTV803.

According to research, the MxL5007T chip I2C interface and baseband DSP have about 110,000 gate units, which account for 18% of the entire chip. Compared with ADMTV803 (its area only accounts for 5% of the whole chip), MxL5007T digital control logic scale A lot bigger.

In addition, the chip integrates two phase-locked loops. In addition to the phase-locked loop for signal down-conversion, which is usually integrated by the silicon tuner chip, a phase-locked loop that generates a relatively low-frequency clock is also used. Analog to digital conversion sampling of the received signal. It is reported that MxL5007T is currently used for cable TV signal reception.

ADMTV102 is a product with high market share, and its performance is relatively balanced. The disadvantage is that the power consumption is slightly higher and the number of off-chip components is more (about 20). ADMTV102's upgraded product, ADMTV803, reduces power consumption to approximately 90mW. At the same time, it integrates many resistors, capacitors and other devices, reducing the number of off-chip devices to six, which is beneficial to reduce system cost. In addition, its noise figure is about 1.5dB lower than ADMTV102. The receiving sensitivity performance is greatly improved.

The Mxl5007T supports the 44M~1G frequency band and supports the IF output, which results in higher power consumption than other CMMB tuner. However, its 300mW power consumption is still relatively low in the tuner supporting the full frequency band.

The Siano 1180 tuner area is more than 2 times larger than the ADMTV803, and the cost is high. The official 31mW power consumption is the power consumption of time-sharing operation, and the actual power consumption of the tuner should be higher than ADMTV803.

The TP3021 integrates Sharp's tuner and numerous external components for maximum integration and sensitivity. However, due to the high price, the actual application is less.

From the actual use and test of the chip, ADMTV102 is a better choice for CMMB applications. In the next 1-2 years, its upgrade product ADMTV803 will have better performance and lower overall cost.
