As usual, Akamai's report still focuses on data such as global network connectivity, Internet speed, broadband usage and popularity, and network security. The most important aspect of this report is that between the fourth quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013, the global average Internet speed increased from 2.9Mbps to 3.1Mbps, an increase of 4% from the previous quarter, but a year-on-year increase of up to 17%.
Akamai used 123 countries and regions as examples to prove the conclusion that the average Internet speed of the global Internet increased year-on-year in the first quarter of this year. Statistics show that in the first quarter of this year, the slowest year-on-year increase in Internet speed was Oman, which increased by 1.4% year-on-year, and the fastest growth rate was Iraq, which increased by 122% year-on-year. Overall, in the first quarter of this year, the average internet speeds of 117 countries have increased from the previous month, with Kuwait increasing by 0.7% and Guatemala increasing by 75%.
South Korea's Internet speed is still ranked first in the world, reaching 14.2Mbps. Although it has dropped by 10%, it has increased by 1.5%. Japan and Hong Kong, China rank second and third, with network speeds of 11.7Mbps (up 3.9% from the previous month and 6.8% year-on-year) and 10.9Mbps (up 9% from the previous month and 16% year-on-year). The third to tenth places are Switzerland, Finland, Latvia, Czech Republic, Sweden, the United States and Denmark. The internet speed in China is 1.7Mbps.
In the first quarter of this year, the global broadband (broadband speed of more than 4Mbps) penetration rate increased by 5.8% to 46%; global high-speed broadband (broadband speed of more than 10Mbps) broadband penetration rate increased by 10% to 13%.
Akamai's data also shows that from the fourth quarter of 2012 to the first quarter of 2013, mobile Internet data traffic doubled. In addition, in the first quarter of this year, global mobile voice traffic continued to grow, although the growth rate was only 4%.
Perhaps in the near future, the speed of mobile Internet will further increase. As the number of mobile users continues to grow, competition in this market will become more intense.
