Foreign media reported that GE announced plans to use augmented reality technology for equipment production in the company's three factory supply chains next year. According to the company, computer-generated images will be superimposed into the real-world view of workers through augmented reality on the mobile side, helping workers assemble complex mechanical parts.
It is reported that in January 2017, GE's employees at the General Electric Oil and Gas Turbine Machinery Plant in Florence, Italy will use augmented reality technology to superimpose virtual images in gas nozzle manufacturing to accurately measure dozens of nozzles. . The technology includes a range of sensors, application software, and tablets and cameras. Later in the year, GE will also adopt augmented reality technology in its power and aerospace manufacturing sectors.
Matteo Bellucci, lab manager at GE's Global Research Center, points out that early results from augmented reality experiments confirm that this technology can reduce errors in production and compress production practices and improve plant quality.
Matteo Bellucci holds a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. He said, "We are testing augmented reality in the actual factory environment. It works fine, so we plan to apply this technology in actual production."
Currently, in GE's factories, the use of smart glasses is not compatible with safety regulations. Therefore, Matteo Bellucci placed a tablet on the bracket in front of the production line for the nozzles, which is convenient for workers to superimpose images. He pointed out, "In the beginning we did it very simple, to facilitate the operation."
Dr. Matteo Bellucci pointed out that currently turbine workers need to make more than 100 measurements of the gas turbine nozzles during the production process to ensure quality. They need to manually input the measurements into a spreadsheet. This task is often error-prone and very cumbersome. After using the augmented reality technology, the worker can observe the position to be measured by himself, and the tablet will automatically recognize the measurement. When the measurement is complete, the red color near the tablet display area will turn green and the measurement data will be transmitted wirelessly to the computer database. If the measurement data does not meet the requirements, the worker will be notified via the tablet to measure again. In the experiment, the time required for the staff to perform the measurement was compressed from 8 hours to 1 hour, and the results were remarkable.
Xiaobian has something to say: GE will use augmented reality technology in production as just an example. In the next few years, with the development of smart glasses and other forms, enterprises will become more and more popular using augmented reality technology. According to market research firm Forrester Research, 14.4 million US industrial workers will use smart glasses for production in 2025. The company’s spending in this area will soar from $6 million this year to $3.6 billion, and the augmented reality has huge market potential in the industrial sector.
