July 24, 2018—ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ON), which promotes energy-efficient innovation, launched two new products that can be used together for USB-C (Type-C) applications. It also provides advantages in other modern power applications. The new device is the USB type-c analog audio switch FSA4480 with integrated protection function, and the current sense amplifier NCS21x series.

FSA4480 is a high-performance USB type-c port multimedia switch that supports analog audio headsets, allowing the universal USB type-c port to transmit USB2.0 signals, analog audio and analog microphone signals. The device supports the audio detection path, is a fully integrated and optimized solution, simplifies the import design, and minimizes the footprint of the entire solution. It integrates high voltage protection of up to 20 volts (V) DC power supply, and supports OMTP and CTIA (sometimes called the American Headphone Jack (AHJ)) smart phone headset standard pin output. The over-voltage protection (OVP) is integrated on the common node pins, and the unplugging of any audio equipment is automatically detected.

FSA4480 integrates I2C interface and is easily controlled by a host processor, which greatly reduces audio pops and clicks due to changes. The device uses a small WLCSP chip package with a size of only 2.24 mm x 2.28 mm x 0.5 mm, which is very suitable for space-constrained mobile applications, such as smart phones, tablets, digital cameras and speakers. It can also be used in computing devices, including notebook computers, desktop computers, and hybrid notebook computers.

The NCS21x series of bidirectional current-sense amplifiers include integrated, highly matched precision resistors, which provide an accurate and compact system design for measuring small differential voltages. These devices can detect common-mode voltages in the range of -0.3 to 26 V and are suitable for high-side and low-side current detection. The zero-drift architecture of NCS21xR provides low input bias voltage (as low as 35 uV) and low offset drift (as low as 0.5 uV/°C). Combining these devices with devices with integrated gain settings can detect the smaller voltage drop of the shunt, providing higher gain accuracy and excellent temperature performance.

These devices are configured for 50/100/200 and 500/gain options, with a maximum gain error of ±1%, consume 40 uA of low quiescent current, and significantly improve energy efficiency, making them extremely suitable for battery-powered applications that require power saving. The small SC-70 and UQFN packages make them ideal for monitoring the charge and discharge current of battery management in handheld applications such as smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers. With the adoption of USB type-c in fast-growing markets such as hybrid and electric vehicles and some consumer electronic products, these current sense amplifiers have been used in power management, motor control, and signal conditioning modules.
