In particular, driven by the miniaturization of devices and applications and the simplification of use, multi-kinetic touch screens and touch surfaces have gained popularity. Despite the many advantages of human-computer interaction (HMI), it has a serious drawback: the tactile feedback to user actions is very limited and not powerful enough. Therefore, such human-computer interactions are often complicated to operate, and are prone to input errors and even security risks, such as when used in a car. Because such human-machine interaction tactile feedback is insufficient or missing, the driver has to pay attention to them, so that road traffic cannot be considered.

Unparalleled acceleration, force and responsiveness

The innovative TDK Group's piezo actuators with tactile feedback have unmatched performance in terms of acceleration, force and responsiveness, so the quality of their tactile feedback is unprecedented. This compact and powerful actuator is equipped with integrated sensing capabilities that greatly enhance the sensing experience of human-computer interaction by combining a wide range of human antenna sensitivity. While conventional tactile systems require separate tactile sensors in addition to actual antenna actuators, actuators with tactile feedback utilize direct piezoelectric effects to generate voltage or charge to the external electrodes and can be detected by drive. By virtue of the high linearity of the voltage or charge applied force, the actuator responds with tactile feedback as soon as a specified amount of force is applied.

Compact and powerful piezoelectric technology

The new actuator with tactile feedback is based on a multilayer piezoelectric plate with a cost-effective copper inner electrode. Thanks to the multi-layer piezo-plate technology, the new actuators can be driven by relatively low voltages of ≤120 V. At startup, the piezoelectric plate expands only slightly along the z-axis and contracts along the x-axis and y-axis due to the quantitative piezoelectric effect. This type of element uses a cymbal on both sides of the platen as an operating lever to expand the amount of contraction by a factor of 15 on the z-axis. Initially, we only offer 5N types with displacements up to 100 μm and 20N types with displacements ≥200 μm or more. In addition, the two actuators are available in 12.7 mm x 12.7 mm x 1.6 mm and 26 mm x 26 mm x 2.4 mm compact sizes and can generate forces of up to 5 N and 20 N.

Compared to conventional electromagnetic brakes such as eccentric rotating electrical actuators (ERM) and linear resonant actuators (LRA), piezoelectric actuators with haptic feedback have the best acceleration and force, maximum insertion height and shortest response time. This is an all-in-one independent component with integrated sensing: the 5N model achieves an acceleration of 5.0 g with a rise time of 2 ms, while the 20N model has an acceleration of 15.0 g with a rise time of only 1 ms. In contrast, the traditional LRA only provides an acceleration of 1.7 g with a rise time of 25 ms.

Unparalleled tactile feedback quality for a wide range of applications

Unlike traditional electromagnetic actuators, piezo actuators with haptic feedback can excite stimuli ranging from 1 Hz to 1000 Hz. Thus, such tactile piezoelectric actuators have no significant frequency and amplitude limitations for custom haptic feedback of major human mechanoreceptors. Thus, the new actuator enables designers to custom develop high-definition haptic feedback profiles that users would like to obtain from cutting-edge human-computer interaction.

Piezo actuators with tactile feedback are used in vehicles, smartphones and tablets, home appliances, automatic teller machines (ATMs) and vending machines (Vending Machines), game controllers, industrial equipment and therapeutic devices.
