PS4 Pro and PS4 Comparison Tests: Little Improvement on PSVR (I)

Today is the day when Sony PS4 Pro starts selling. In order to play PSVR, it is worthwhile to purchase a new Pro. Let's compare it and see how PS4 Pro brings PSVR experience.

Exterior

First of all, in terms of appearance, the PS4 uses a two-layer design, which is the disk drive and the host part, while the PS4 Pro adds one more layer and looks thicker. In essence, the size of the PS4 Pro changed from 275.1 x 305.1 x 53.1 mm in the original PS4 to 295 x 327 x 55 mm. From the data point of view, the PS4 Pro has increased in length and width, but the height has not changed much, and the weight is about 0.5 kg.

In terms of interfaces, the PS4 Pro does not change much compared to the PS4. It only adds a USB 3.0 interface. This does not require users to use the PlayStation VR to worry about insufficient interfaces. The optical audio output port is also preserved. Unlike the PS4 Slim, this port was cut to reduce the thickness.

In addition, PS4 Pro's HDMI interface has been changed to the 2.0 standard, while the original PS4 uses HDMI 1.4. This is to allow the PS4 Pro to output 4K resolution images. Moreover, the official confirmed that the 4K resolution signal of the PS4 Pro can be directly output without replacing the original 1080p HDMI cable. The same as the Sony PS4 Slim is in the Wi-Fi connectivity, PS4 Pro upgraded to 802.11ac standard, and the Bluetooth protocol has also been upgraded from the previous 2.1 to Bluetooth 4.0.

In addition, a user is generally dissatisfied with the problem that is most expected to be upgraded: Blu-ray Disc is supported. This problem has not been solved. The PS4Pro still does not support 4K ultra-high-definition Blu-ray discs. Like the PS4, it only supports 1080p. Corresponding competitor Microsoft Xbox One S supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, which may take away some users.

performance

In terms of performance upgrades, the PS4 Pro has added 4K ultra-high-definition picture output capability, HDR playback capability, and Ultra HD streaming video playback capability, and the PS4 Pro has also upgraded internal components and configurations.

On the hardware side, the PS4 Pr still uses the same AMD Jaguar x64-64 eight-core processor as the PS4, just increasing the clock speed by 30% from 1.6GHz to 2.1GHz. The graphics card upgrade is even more obvious. PS4 Pro's graphics processing power is double that of the PS4, and the GPU operating frequency has been increased from 800MHz to 911MHz. The floating point capability per second of the video card also increased from 184 million times before the PS4 to 420 million times, and the output of the 4K screen will be even more powerful. The PS4 Pro also adds 1GB of DDR3 memory.

Comparison of game examples

However, it is said that those are all imaginary, and these enhanced features are only useful if they are brought into the player's eyes and ears through the game, so we look at the actual ones.

Only PS4 and PSVR games with enhanced image quality can play the upgraded and powerful processing power on the PS4 Pro, showing the best results. There are currently 13 game update quality enhancement patches, which are accompanied by the release of PS4 Pro. (For the complete list, see the previous report here: insert the historical link here. The remaining upgrades will be gradually carried out within two months of the end of the year). Whereas Battlezone has achieved an increase in image quality, developers have noted that cockpit lighting and reflective effects have improved, but according to our experience, the difference that can be observed with the naked eye is not significant.

The following is the comparison video

Compared with screen shots, no significant differences were found. However, when you look closely, you can see a slight improvement in the resolution of reticles and other interface components, but in the process of the game, you will almost never experience any difference.
