Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are changing in many industries including healthcare, training, education and manufacturing. A new report from data and analysis company GlobalData shows that immersive technology will now change the retail industry.
According to GlobalData, AR can be used to guide store customers and provide information about goods, while VR can be used for immersive product demonstrations.
The report pointed out that AR can help in-store and warehouse employees by providing practical information, while using AR smart glasses and other devices in a hands-free manner. In contrast, VR can be used for immersive training scenarios.
Many companies have already started using AR technology. For example, IKEA has created a high-definition showroom that uses 3D VR to showcase its products. In a similar way, L'Orreal set up a Make Up Genius shop in Paris, so that women can use AR technology to test a variety of make-up and makeup.
Andreas Olah, GlobalData's digital retail analyst, said: "AR and VR have been in the retail market for a while, with various supermarkets, department stores, fashion retailers and DIY stores launching various AR uses to navigate from store to store. From virtual clothing to product demonstrations, games, and interactions with virtual store assistants, it is expected that AR technology will become more prevalent in the retail industry, and it is expected that furniture retailers will participate in AR competition more intensely and project furniture to their homes. Encourage online purchases."
Other major retailers have also begun adopting VR and AR technologies such as Tesco, Carrefour, and Kroger, while Wal-Mart has furthered the advancement of virtual reality technology by acquiring a small VR startup called Spatialand to change the shopping experience.
