Is the LTE baseband the key to the success of smartphones?

The modem (modulator/demodulator) is an important mechanism for mobile devices to connect to cyberspace. For example, LTE modem chips are used in more advanced smart phones. If there is no data machine, the smart phone can only be said to be a personal information management device or a personal digital assistant (PDA). I still remember the PDA used in the early 1990s, as if everything had to be done by myself. Moreover, if you are not connected to the Internet, you will probably only be able to play simple mobile games (such as "Gemstone Cubes").

This kind of feeling just imagines that you can't get online when you are flying. In flight mode, you can't connect to the Internet or send and receive emails, which means you can't log in to Facebook, Instagram, Periscope, Skype or FaceTIme. However, for some people, after a long time restricted access to the Internet may become sluggish, then it should be "grateful" for the importance of the existence of the data machine chip!

A smart phone consists of two main components: a data machine and an application processor (AP). As mentioned earlier, the data machine is used to connect to the external world, while the application processor basically provides computing, video, graphics and audio for games, productivity, and processing of external world data. Based on the measured performance of these two main components, it can be used as an indicator to evaluate the value performance (C/P) of a smart phone. Of course, there are other considerations for purchasing a smart phone, such as shape, screen size, weight, and even the appeal of the product.

Since ARM or X86 components are already available, the application processor performance of several smart phone brands has been released. However, if the LTE modem lacks the ability to affect the performance of the Internet, then regardless of the application processor with 4, 6, 8 or even 10 core CPU becomes irrelevant.

However, for those who want to use the evaluation data as a reference for purchase, LTE modem performance is not easy to measure. First of all, it may take hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase test equipment, which is enough to evaluate the performance of the data machine, but this is not the equipment that ordinary engineers can get in the office. However, everyone should agree that the ability to connect (connect to the global network as you wish) and data speed are the most desirable features of smart phones.

Companies that have the best equipment to measure this performance are usually the data processor chip makers themselves, but they generally do not disclose measurement data to observe their own data machines or other competitor products. However, at this year's Computex in Taipei, Qualcomm shared some competitive information and compared the important features of its own competitors with the other three competitors.

In addition to Qualcomm, there are several LTE smart phone modem chip manufacturers on the market that are widely used in mobile devices, including Intel, MediaTek, South Korea's Samsung, and China. HiSilicon, Leadcore and Spreadtrum. Although Qualcomm did not understand which three competitors are compared in the figure, the media reports after Computex have revealed that the three competitors A, B and C are MediaTek, Intel and Samsung. Competitor B has repeatedly disclosed its claimed product performance, but we rarely see it in the market. So, for example, we can see that in the briefing published by Computex, Qualcomm rated competitor B's products as moderate performance. It is worth noting that Qualcomm chose to focus on three main data to compare the performance of the data machine: transmission speed (throughput), power consumption, and voice call quality.

For the transmission of Instagram photos or uploading to uplinks such as cloud storage, the speed of the data transfer is critical. The downlink transmission speed is important for applications such as fast browsing websites, YouTube videos, or receiving Instagram photos. Compared to competitor B, Qualcomm rated its Snapdragon X10 modem with a 30% faster LTE network uplink transmission speed on the German network. I personally think this is fair, because Intel's data machine is designed in Germany. In addition, the X10 modem delivers 25% faster LTE data transfer speeds (Category 6 hive edge) and 186% faster at HSPA+.

Power consumption can be one of the biggest concerns for smartphones, especially for heavy users and users who often need voice calls. It is also the main concern for users who use their phones all day long. For example, we have seen Apple recently introduced the Smart Battery Case battery case for its iPhone 6/6s smartphone, in order to increase the user's battery usage. I think that the most important thing for mobile phone users is battery life. Compared with competitor B, Qualcomm rated its X10 data machine with 55% better power consumption for voice calls, 14% better performance for LTE data, and 145% better for LTE standby power consumption.

Since the main purpose of a cellular phone is to make a voice call, voice quality and a better call experience are critical. But VoLTE is not yet popular, and most people don't understand that their LTE smartphones are back to circuit-switched voice. This can cause the call to be disturbed. Compared to the perfect performance of the X10, Qualcomm rated its competitor B with a 13% voice call error rate. Since sometimes users will gradually migrate from LTE to 3G networks (and vice versa), Qualcomm reviews its X10 three times faster when switching between different networks.

When purchasing smart phones, consumers generally ignore the importance of connection capabilities, but the performance of the device and the good user experience depend on the best connection performance, especially the cellular (LTE) and Wi- The linearity of Fi. If you have less connectivity, your smartphone will basically be in flight mode.

Of course, when buying a book, you can't "take people by appearance", and the same is true for smart phones. However, the author's reputation can often be regarded as an indicator of the quality of the content in the book; similarly, the technical reputation of the data machine supplier is of course a clear indicator of the connectivity of the smart phone.
