MIT has recently had new research, and a team of engineers from the college invented a sponge-like device that generates heat by absorbing solar energy and heats the water to boiling. Impressively, this material can even be DIY into a variety of shapes.
“We have created this floating solar receiver that heats water to absorb water by absorbing heat from solar energy,†said George Ni, head of research at MIT. This receiver turns water into steam without any optical concentrators, mirrors and lenses, and it can reduce the cost of solar systems in the future, and it is expected that more people will start using solar energy resources.
This project started in 2014 and has achieved great progress. First of all, this equipment can reach 100 degrees Celsius without any optical technology, and the raw materials of this new result are very easy to be commercialized. Basically, they are some common foam materials, and when combined, they can form a heating function. .
Ni said that in terms of practical applications, desalination, sewage treatment, and medical device disinfection are all future applications, and the current research requires additional testing and dedicated application control. However, it has already formed a platform, which can further reduce costs and control the size of the volume in the future.
