Texas Instruments Announces a Seamlessly Converted Buck Boost Converter

Recently, Texas Instruments (TI) announced a seamless conversion buck boost converter for RF power amplifiers in 3G and 4G LTE smartphones, tablets and data cards. TI's new LM3269 1A buck boost converter extends battery life, reducing current consumption by 50% and reducing amplifier cooling to 30 degrees Celsius.

The latest 4G handsets have higher data upload requirements, requiring "real-time" turn-on or turn-off for various applications, which requires higher RF power amplifier output levels, allowing LTE to operate even at lower battery voltages. The LM3269 dynamically adjusts the power supplied to the power amplifier based on power requirements for energy savings and extended battery run time. This converter allows the amplifier to operate over the entire battery voltage range to meet these demands with the highest efficiency and lowest noise.

Key features and benefits of the LM3269:

· Meets 3G and 4G LTE amplifier power requirements: Supports a comprehensive spectrum of RF output power even at lower battery voltages;

· Extend battery run time: up to 95% power efficiency (3.7 V at 300 mA, output voltage 3.3 V), halving battery drain, reducing heat dissipation by 30 °C;

· The smallest solution: The 2.4MHz converter is available in a micro microSMD package with a 0.6 mm high total solution size of 18.8 mm2.

Growing RF power management IC product lineup

TI offers the industry's most comprehensive line of DC/DC adaptive power circuits for RF power amplifiers. Earlier this year, TI introduced the LM3242 and LM3243 buck regulators for 2G, 3G and 4G LTE power amplifiers.

Availability

The LM3269 is available in a 2 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.6 mm, 12-bump lead-free mircoSMD package.
