October 13, 2015, Beijing News, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced a reached the industry's lowest quiescent current (Iq) of highly integrated battery management solution, this solution with a buck converter operating voltage With a quiescent current of only 1.8n at 1.8V, it minimizes power consumption while maximizing battery life. The bq25120 features a linear charger, configurable low dropout regulator (LDO), load switch, buck converter, push button control and battery voltage monitor in a single device. As long as the battery voltage range is between 3.6V and 4.65V and the fast charge current is between 5mA and 300mA, the bq25120 can be used, which makes wearable and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications in a normally open state without consuming Light battery power. Features and advantages:
Minimum quiescent current of 700nA: By using power path technology and a low quiescent current buck converter, the bq25120 can be kept normally open at 1.8V operating voltage. This allows the main microprocessor, including TI's host microprocessor, Bluetooth® RF, and SimpleLinkTM Bluetooth Smart CC2640 wireless MCU, to be powered from a “wasted†battery during charging, enabling continuous operation. Because this solution features a 50nA standby mode quiescent current, designers can maximize battery life.
High integration: Configurable load switch / LDO optimization system turns off features such as rarely used radios and monitors to minimize battery drain. The solution also includes an integrated battery voltage monitor that enables the charge indicator, buck converter and button control features.
Industry's Smallest Battery Management Solution: The 2.5mm x 2.5mm Wafer Chip Package (WCSP) used in this solution enables a small footprint, allowing designers to easily integrate this device into the latest Wearable design. In addition, to make the solution more robust, designers can adopt the CC2640 wireless MCU solution (the device for Bluetooth Smart applications is the industry's smallest quad flat no-lead package solution with integrated flash).
Accurate charge termination current as low as 500μA: This feature maximizes the amount of power delivered to the battery before the charge cycle is completed, allowing the battery to be powered externally in a more robust and fully charged state.
User flexibility: The bq25120's I2C programming interface allows designers to set key parameters such as battery charger voltage, current, termination threshold, input current limit, load switch control, flexible timer and reset options.
In order to integrate more terminal application features, the bq25120 can be used with other devices. Ultra low quiescent current buck converter, TPS62743 can be used for additional buck output. Boost converters can also be used for display integration. The TPS61046 provides 12V boost, while the TPS61240 supports load connectivity for 5V boost for heart rate monitors or small form factor displays.
