Trump Government Signs New Decree to Disable Kaspersky Software

According to foreign media reports, US President Trump signed an order on Tuesday, local time, then the government departments will not be able to continue using Kaspersky Lab's anti-virus software. This ban further reinforces a decree issued by the Trump administration in September this year that private organizations need to remove Kaspersky software within 90 days. The new law now applies to civil and military networks.

On August 31, local time, the U.S. government banned federal agencies from using Kaspersky Lab’s software products from Russian cyber security companies on the grounds of national security. The Russian side regrets this and believes that this move deviates from the common goals of the two countries and delays the prospect of improving Russia-US relations.

The US intelligence community has a longstanding suspicion of Kaspersky. They believe that this Moscow-based security company has a certain connection with the Kremlin. The impact on the Kremlin is "immune" and it is damaged by anti-virus software. The United States is suspected of national security. Senator Jeanne Shaheen of the Democratic Party stated: "There is an adequate record for Kaspersky's case and it is very worrying for them. This new decree is too late."

Wang Xiaowei, a researcher at the European Research Center of the China University of Political Science and Law, believes that the US federal government's deterrence of Kaspersky is inevitable. It is a continuation of the US-Russian diplomatic warfare, the United States’ identification of Russia’s interference in the US’s 2016 election and the “Tongmen” investigation. Wang Xiaowei pointed out that the diplomatic warfare between the United States and Russia has infiltrated into many fields, and economic, diplomatic, and civilian products may become victims of the deterioration of US-Russian relations in the future. "For the United States, Kaspersky does not only have Kaspersky software but Kaspersky is a victim," Wang Xiaowei said. "The launch of a large-scale, wide-ranging investigation will inflict untold hardships on the development of U.S.-Russia relations. negative impacts."

Kaspersky Lab issued a statement regarding the “blocking” of the United States, denying any association with any government and saying that it will not help a certain government to launch cyber spying. The statement said that critics misinterpreted Russia's data sharing laws, which apply only to communications services. Kaspersky emphasized that he has no relationship with any government and will not assist a government in espionage. Both Russia and the United States tried to use it as a chess piece for geopolitical games. In order to relieve the outside world of its suspicions, Kaspersky also submitted software and future updated code for inspection by all parties in October this year.

Kaspersky said in a statement on Tuesday that the company is concerned about the geographical specificity of the new US decree. However, even so, they will continue to work to protect customers from cyber threats and continue to work with the IT security community to combat cybercrime on a global scale.
