3D printing to create a foldable new drone

UAVs have been widely used in various fields and have become the most important part of life. It is reported that Switzerland has created a new type of drone inspired by origami. It has got rid of the previous heavy or oversized problems, mainly used for the delivery of goods. There is a collapsible carbon fiber cage that protects the drone and cargo from damage.

Recently, the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, used 3D printing technology to develop an innovative origami-inspired new drone that can carry packages weighing up to 500 grams. This unique new drone has already considered several potential customers because it can carry up to 2 kilometers, and the extra weight means that the application of drone technology will soon increase dramatically.

3D printing to create a foldable new drone

With the development of technology, drones are gradually becoming everyday products, and the advanced technology of the past is now being used for parcel delivery. A research team at the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, has made some progress recently, but in the past it was limited due to the large size requirements. They used 3D printing technology to develop an innovative origami-inspired new drone that can carry packages weighing up to 500 grams.

The main innovation of the drone was developed by the EPFL Intelligent Systems Laboratory funded by NCCR Robotics, which was designed to surround the items that need to be delivered. It has a collapsible carbon fiber cage that wraps the item and, like the package, protects the drone and cargo from collision or fall. Only one action is required to fold or unfold the cage, reducing its volume by more than 90% for easy transport.

The parts of the drone are produced using 3D printing technology to reduce weight. The drone uses four different rotating propellers with a special safety system that prevents the rotating propeller from rotating when the drone's carbon fiber frame remains open. This means that delivery will be more efficient as the recipient can reach out to grab the drone to get the goods.

In addition, users can remotely control and track drones by using a smartphone or other mobile device application, but it is set to autonomous flight, proprietary software written by EPFL researchers. The drone was tested on the EPFL campus as proof of concept before it finally entered commercial distribution.

This unique new drone has already considered several potential customers because it can carry up to 2 kilometers, and the extra weight means that the application of drone technology will soon increase dramatically. In addition to the day-to-day work of providing mail, developers from EPFL foresee that drones will be used to provide first-aid supplies to people suffering from natural disasters or other emergencies.

Przemyslaw Kornatowski, who developed the drone, said: "This project is an ongoing work. In addition to strengthening the ability to detect and avoid objects, we are exploring the possibility of increasing the payload capacity of the drone and enhancing autonomy. The version of the drone will have a parachute being implemented to improve safety. The software and drone design should also be improved to better avoid collisions."

Although the project is still in its early stages, this drone is an impressive solution for a variety of delivery issues.
