In the past, we used visible light communication technology to achieve precise indoor positioning through LED lighting. In fact, the use of such bulbs and technology does not stop there, for example, it can also carry out wireless network transmission.
Recently, the Fraunhofer Henrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Germany announced the successful implementation of 3Gbps data transmission speed in a laboratory environment using ordinary LED bulbs . In real life scenarios (such as exhibitions), this system can also reach 500Mbps. speed.
Visible light communications (VLC), sometimes referred to as LIFI. It has received a lot of attention in recent years, and one important reason is that LED lighting is becoming increasingly popular. Unlike incandescent and fluorescent lamps, LEDs are solid-state electronics, which means they can be controlled like other electronic components and achieve high-speed conversion. VLC is also WiFi in nature, except that it uses megahertz (light) instead of microwave (WiFi) - of course, its receiving terminal is a photodetector, not an antenna.
Unfortunately, there are not many detailed descriptions in HHI's press release, except for numbers like 3Gpbs. In the past, the VLC system was able to achieve a data transmission speed of 500 Mbps in a range of 4 meters or a transmission speed of 120 Mbps in a distance of 20 meters.
Compared to the standard LED bulbs actually used, their VLC system is a black box - there is an LED and photodetector in front, and the rest of the network connection and Ethernet interface are hidden behind the box.
In order to reach 3Gpbs, HHI researchers have found a new way: no longer use only one LED light, now there are 3 colors. It is not clear whether the transmission range of this new technology has changed from the past, but it is likely to be the same. Tested in the environment of the pavilion, 3Gpbs became 500Mbps, which is still very fast.
Visible light communication has a number of advantages. In theory, LiFi can incorporate any LED light into the network connection. LiFi transmission is also in a very high frequency (several hundred hertz), far beyond the tightening of fixed antennas and wireless spectrum and policy licensing. For the same reason, LiFi can be widely used in those with radio frequency interference. Places such as exhibitions and places where RF interference is prohibited, such as in hospitals or on airplanes.
HHI researchers claim that VLC improves your privacy. Because in theory, your signal is easily covered with opaque material, you can prevent others from snooping.
Of course, this scene has to become a reality, we still need to wait for the first commercial LiFi LED bulb and notebook or smartphone with LiFi module to enter the market. Although many startups and research groups have made a lot of progress, there is still no clear road map.
It is very special in the use of the scene, such as the communication of ultra-high-speed short-distance transmission to the car through street lamps... These technologies are becoming more and more mature, and it is really only a matter of time to hope that LiFi becomes a reality.
