Soft, woven fiber LED: for flexible wearable displays


Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST) have invented a fibrous LED that can be knitted or woven directly to form part of the fabric itself.

In order to produce multiple strands of LED wire, the scientists first used a polyethylene terephthalate fiber, dipped in a specific solution several times, then baked at 266 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes, and The organic material is layered and ready. Once dried, the impregnated fibers are again wetted in a yellow polymeric organic LED solution, baked in an oven, and finally coated with a lithium fluoride/aluminum mixture.

Researchers believe that the use of this method to produce LED fiber may accelerate the commercialization of wearable displays, because the technology can use the textile manufacturing method of the roll-to-roll process to inexpensively and mass-produce the fibers. As a result, LED fibers are as easy to mass produce as current nylon or polyethylene fibers.
