The Internet of Things, the trillion-dollar Tang Yan meat, everyone wants to eat a bite. So which technology giant will seize the opportunity?
The Internet of Things is still a new thing, but it is developing rapidly. Market research firm IDC predicts that by 2020, the Internet of Things will become an international market worth $1.46 trillion, compared with 700 billion last year. A trillion-dollar market means that many companies will want to get a slice of it. So who is the leader in the IoT industry? We consulted some well-known analysts to find out.
Intel
In the world of connected devices, all of these small devices will require a processor chip. Intel hopes to become a company that provides chips for WAN. The company has launched a variety of products to meet the needs of the Internet of Things - from the Quark product line that provides low-power computing for small devices, to the Atom processor that best fits rich graphics rendering.
AT&T
AT&T hopes that its broadband network will become a key driver of the Internet of Things. The company launched a cloud-based data storage service, M2X, and a development portal, Data Flow, to build applications for the IoT world. AT&T hopes that by 2017, a total of 10 million vehicles will be connected to its network, including 1.2 million fleet vehicles and 243,000 containers.
Cisco
Cisco predicts that by 2020, there will be 50 million devices connected to the so-called "Internet of Everything." Cisco expects many of these devices to communicate using their network devices. Cisco has developed a range of IoT services—from network connectivity (including switching, routing, wireless access, and embedded network hardware) to fog computing services (taking data collection, storage, and analysis to the edge of the network) to Data analysis, security, management and automation.
Dell
As an enterprise hardware manufacturer, Dell is preparing infrastructure components for the IoT world. It provides endpoint connectivity for devices, plus a back-end storage and analytics platform to manage IoT data. In 2014, Dell partnered with Intel to open an IoT lab in Silicon Valley.
