NXP Semiconductors has introduced the world's smallest and least energy-intensive 64-bit IoT ARM processor called the QorIQ LS1012A.
The QorIQ LS1012A chip has a 64-bit ARMv8 processor with a network packet accelerator and a built-in security system. The chip measures 9.6 square millimeters and potential applications include: next-generation IoT devices, portable entertainment platforms, portable storage applications, mobile hard drives, and mobile storage for cameras, tablets and other rechargeable devices.
In addition, the LS1012A is the first processor built for a new storage solution ("objected storage"). "Objected Storage" relies on an intelligent hard drive that interfaces directly to the Ethernet in the data center. Because of this, it also has very strict requirements on the size of the processor: it must be small enough to be integrated directly onto the hard drive board.
Tareq Bustami, senior vice president of NXP Semiconductors, said: "The LS1012 processor's technological breakthroughs in energy consumption, size and performance are ideal for consumer electronics, networking equipment and the Internet of Things. It helps system designers. And developers to create more innovative end products."
According to NXP Semiconductors, the LS1012 is the only 1 watt energy-consuming 64-bit processor on the market, and this processor will also reduce overall system-level costs. Thanks to innovative chip assembly technology, this processor can be implanted on low-cost boards.
The LS1012A processor will be available for sale in April 2016 and is currently scheduled.
